Here a few more things you might like to know about Unit Standards...

They are to do with assessing, and the Portfolio of Evidence

How does one get tested against a Unit Standard?

This process is called assessment, and is carried out by an assessor qualified to assess against the particular US. The candidate can be assessed in two basic ways:
  • go on a course which covers the US and be assessed to see if s/he is competent
  • ask to be assessed on the basis of previous experience in the field, which is known as Recognition of Prior Knowledge (RPL).

The Assesor will use an instrument to record performance against each of the Assesment Criteria.

How does one become an Assessor?

  • Firstly, one needs to be assessed as competent under US 115753, which is the US that covers how to assess. For this, one would go on a course or follow the RPL route, as with any other US
  • Then one obtains endorsement as an assessor with the ETDP-SETA. However, this does still not enable one to assess against any Unit Standards.
  • So next one applies to the SETA for whom one wishes to assess, to register as an assessor. This registration requires the ETDP-SETA endoresment, as well as evidence that one has the necessary industry know-how.

What is the Portfolio of Evidence (PoE)?

A candidate for assessment needs to gather proof that s/he has obtained the required standard of work. Such proof is gathered into the PoE. The assesor will need to be satisfied that the proof is valid: eg is it the candidate's own work, does it show evidence of the actual competency, is it current and so on.

Items in the PoE could include samples of the candidates output from the workplace, if it is easy to gather, such as sample of writing, or forms filled in. It could include photographs of work such as bricklaying or welding.

PoEs are gatherd by candidates following either the coursework or RPL route.
